If Cuba did it, can we?
Typical of the questions asked by WeCan,
a group of ordinary people living
in the Western suburbs of Melbourne.
WeCan meets once a fortnight to collate information
that’s consistent with our vision
for living in a sustainable,
sense-able part of the city.
Since out inception April 07, we’ve
measured our carbon emissions,
sourced other groups that are collectively
making a difference in the West,
and discovered that a large number of people
in Melbourne’s west are already aware and acting on areas
of potential areas of environmental concern.
When WeMet with the
Maribyrnong City Council,
WeDiscovered that council staff have
innovative strategies being implemented in Melbourne’s West…
and now WeConnect in partnership with the council
to bring you an event.
WeThought WeCould collaborate with people
in the Western suburbs at a movie night
and enquire into environmental issues
that have already resolved in Cuba.
Did you know that a greater percentage of Cubans
own their own home than in America?
And that more farmers in Cuba now own their own land?
It sounds like Cubans have already
tapped into an unknown resource of energy
that is making a difference on the planet…
can the Western suburbs of Melbourne build on that success,
or are we already implementing effective
structures for sustainable energy?
Meet and discuss strategies that have demonstrated
that people can live together sustainably… why? Because WeCan.

HOW CUBA
A documentary which depicts how people in Cuba
responded to an energy crisis.
"Everyone who is concerned about Peak Oil
needs to see this film”.
Cuba survived an energy famine during the 1990's,
and how it did so
constitutes one of the most important
and hopeful stories of the past,
not just of individual achievement,
but one of the collective mobilization
of an entire society to meet an enormous challenge."
